WHAT MAKES ' FLEABAG ' SO BRILLIANT

Updated: Aug 31, 2021

(Fleabag series review)

A look through into the mind of a dark-humored, dry-witted, and astonishingly intimate woman somehow trying to manage her expenses by running an ... um... guinea pig ish vibe Cafe in modern century London. Yep, we are going to be reading quite something about Fleabag ( pardon me Obama ) directed by a genius in the most non-cliche sense - Phoebe Waller-Bridge. If you are done chewing your nails, let's get reading.

FLEABAG

The most refreshing aspect of watching Fleabag is the fact that there are so few goddamn shows and movies highlighting women in an open comedic manner. And it was high time someone did. The reason why I am so grateful for fleabag's existence. She is someone who makes the most out of her messed-up life without using the fact that it's messy as the means to gain sympathy from the audience.

She utterly needed her friend Boo, a person in her life who now was just a distinct memory. Fleabag would somehow bury it deep inside of her, yet only to see her friend's face flood her mind in the worst of situations.

But what sets her life into motion is a shitload of serious stuff, for example, almost giving her boyfriend a heart attack in an attempt to ninja surprise him in the shower, trying to get her sister Claire to leave her arse of a husband whose creativity level exists to the point of gifting his wife a chain with her name on it and her stepson who has got some fetish for bathtubs and naked stepmoms ( let's just hope it's the bathtub), trying to retrieve a golden sculpture of tits ( u heard that right ), attempting to get a guinea pig out of possible depression and trying not to get burned by God for liking a priest with a really nice neck whom foxes have a thing for. Ok, I think I should shut up before I get canceled.

THE FOURTH WALL

Now, I do not know much about cinematography. But what I do know is that the kind of cinematography used in Fleabag is unlike anything I have ever seen. It takes us a moment to realize, but when we do, that is when we know what makes this show so special.

The frequent habit of Fleabag looking at the camera, at us, directly, was what represented the fourth wall. A delicate matter to many including her, it was a place she found her utmost comfort and even personified it as her 'friend ', though sadly we all knew, she didn't have any.

The glances towards the camera that we took for granted came to an anticipated conclusion which we were afraid of, yet knew deep inside, she needed. Her breaking it. As she walked away from her Fourth Wall without certainty, just like the love of her life did from her, in the season finale.

Since I feel I have succeeded in making you feel sad, which is kinda what I do, I bid you guys farewell in the hope you meet me next time through my words.

P.S - Try not to look good at funerals.
